Changes.

 Planning a Reading Programme.

My top takeaways from today's session are -

Integrate Reading Across the Subjects by including reading activities in different curriculum areas and topics or choose texts from the other curriculum areas, for example

Use

  • texts to teach writing figurative language. Metaphors, Similies and Personification.
  • a range of text types, for example fiction, non-fiction, visuals, videos,  science articles, local purakau,  historical fiction, and math-related stories.

A good tracking and monitoring system to keep everything together. It also gives the students responsibility to meet their learning expectations.
Having everything in one place will make tracking easier and more manageable.

Regular check-ins with students and Reading Tracker will help identify trends/needs to make adjustments to my programme as needed.

A great day of learning with the wonderful Manaiakalani RPI team.

My next steps are, to follow up on any adjustments to my Reading programme to move forward.

Looking forward to the next workshop.

  1. Hi Edwina, It was great to see you today, I know you missed a great day 4 but I'm glad you get to catch it up next term! You have a couple of takeaways from today that should really benefit your learners. As you say the Mahi tracker is a great way for students to take responsibility for their learning. And the use of mentor texts is a great way to provide integration but also improve your writing achievement at the same time, we love bang for buck around here! Looking forward to seeing how you get on over the next 3 weeks. Kiri

  2. Kia ora Edwina. With the time restraints on the timetable, I see absolute sense in integrating reading across the other learning areas. I also like the use of multimodal forms of teaching & learning :-). Ka pai!

  3. Kia ora Edwina,
I am enjoying reading your feedback on the RPI. I can see so many connections between the MPI. Talking about the intergration of reading accross the curriculum especially using pictures books in maths. There are lots of great examples on NZmaths and Nrich. The tracker is a great way of keeping everying in one place especially with the students being able to use it. Thanks for your great posts it keeps me up to date with the learning in the RPI and the great takes aways that your are using and finding useful in your class.
